TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A delegation of United States legislators arrived in Copenhagen on Friday to meet with Danish business leaders. As reported by Anadolu, the visit is taking place amid diplomatic tensions sparked by President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland.
The U.S. legislators attended a working lunch at the Industry House, the headquarters of the Confederation of Danish Industry, after departing from the Danish parliament building, Christiansborg, located in the city center.
The meeting is scheduled to discuss bilateral economic relations and Denmark's efforts to garner international support following the controversial statements made by the United States regarding Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark with strategic value in the Arctic region.
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin from Illinois stated that the delegation wants to reaffirm the long-standing relationship between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland, as reported by the Danish public media, DR.
"We have been friends and allies with Denmark and Greenland for decades. We want them to know that we greatly appreciate that," Durbin said.
He added that the recent statements by President Donald Trump "do not align with what the American people feel and believe."
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Danish Parliament and former Defense Minister, Soren Gade, stated that he has changed his view of the U.S. due to the Washington government's position regarding Greenland.
"I never thought I would speak critically about the United States. But if I am to be able to look Danish veterans in the eye in the future, I can no longer remain silent," Gade wrote on Facebook.
He described the tone of the United States' statements regarding Greenland as "inappropriate."
Trump had previously expressed his desire to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory rich in resources and strategically positioned in the Arctic.
The White House stated on Thursday that the European troop deployment plan to Greenland would not affect Trump's ambition to control the island.
Previously, Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway announced a joint mission to Greenland shortly after talks in Washington between officials from the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland failed to reach an agreement on the issue.
