TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shooter has killed eight children in Shreveport, in the US state of Louisiana, on Sunday, according to local police.
"This is an extensive scene unlike anything most of us have ever seen," Shreveport police chief Wayne Smith told reporters.
The youngest victim was 1 year old, and the oldest was 14, officials said. Two adults were reportedly also shot.
The police also said the crime scene extended across three locations.
Authorities described the incident as a "domestic disturbance."
More details on the victims are to be released after the officials notify their next of kin.
Suspect shot while trying to flee
According to local police representative Chris Bordelon, the dispute broke out early on Sunday morning, with a man opening fire. He is believed to have acted alone.
Some of the children the man shot were described as his "descendants" by Bordelon, in the comments made to the US broadcaster NBC.
"We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations," Bordelon said.
The suspect tried to flee in a stolen car after the shooting and was shot by the police. No officers were injured during the pursuit.
State police have asked people who may have pictures, videos or information relevant to the incident to share it with Louisiana state authorities.
"This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had," Mayor Tom Arceneaux said. "It's a terrible morning."
The city of Shreveport is the third-biggest city in Louisiana and is located near the state border with Texas.
