TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The United States (US) Navy is using robots to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz to restore navigation in the waterway for commercial vessels, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

In late March, CBS News, citing US officials, reported that about a dozen underwater mines were suspected to have been planted by Iran throughout the Strait of Hormuz.

Relevant US officials alleged that Iran deployed Iranian-made Maham 3 and Maham 7 naval mines, which use magnetic and acoustic sensors to detect nearby vessels without contact.

The US military is using air and sea drones equipped with sonar to detect potential mines on the bottom of the strait, the report said. The US Navy is also using a combination of manned and unmanned systems, a US defense official told the newspaper.

In late February, the United States and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties.

On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire, followed by negotiations in Islamabad on April 11, which ended in failure.

Although no resumption of hostilities was announced, the US began a blockade of Iranian ports. Mediators are now working to establish a new round of talks between the US and Iran.
