TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of residents missing due to flash floods in Nduga, Papua’s mountainous region, has increased from 15 to 23 victims. The disaster initially struck last Saturday, November 1, 2025.

"A joint team is still searching for 23 missing residents: 15 in Dal District and 8 in Yuguru District," confirmed Abdul Muhari, Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

According to him, search and rescue efforts are ongoing by a joint team consisting of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and local community members in Nduga.

BNPB confirmed that most of the victims (15 people) went missing after being swept away by flash floods while crossing the Papan River last Saturday afternoon. The tragedy occurred amid heavy rainfall.

The remaining missing persons are from the flash flood-affected areas, which include two villages in Dal District (Dal and Silan Villages) as well as several settlements in Yuguru District. They were reported missing as of last Monday, either swept away by floodwaters or buried by landslide debris.

A joint team of Nduga Regency officials, already on the scene, confirmed that no residents have been displaced by the incident. However, they reportedly face obstacles due to the large amount of mud and blocked road access.

Abdul explained that the BNPB is also continuing to monitor weather developments in the local area based on early warnings from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). "The public is advised to monitor official weather information, while regional BPBDs are expected to continue to increase preparedness and disseminate early warnings to residents," said Abdul Muhari.

Meanwhile, Edy Prakoso, Deputy for Operations and Preparedness at the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), stated that the flood- and landslide-affected areas in Nduga Regency remain designated as a red zone for conflict.

Consequently, Edy confirmed that the TNI Task Force, which is already on site, will primarily handle the search and recovery of the victims. He assured, however, that the Basarnas headquarters and the Papua SAR Office remain on standby. They are prepared to provide support, deploying additional personnel from nearby posts if the security situation allows. "We have coordinated with the TNI," Edy concluded in Jakarta.
