Workplace Fatigue: Here Are Tips to Navigate Burnout

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent survey mentioned that one in three (32 percent) workers in the United States experienced burnout at least once in the past year. Workers commonly experience burnout with signs of excessive fatigue, feelings of failure, and constant questions such as, 'Why am I doing this?'

There may be profound reasons for experiencing such things. Perhaps the goals you pursue do not align with your health. The problem may not lie with you, but your goals.

Health expert Jordan Grumet from the University of Michigan in the United States explains the two main sources of burnout, namely:

1. Unmet Expectations

"No matter how many patients I saved, I could never undo my father’s death. That void remained," he explained, citing Psychology Today on February 23, 2025.

2. Lack of Joy in the Process

"Even on days when things went well, I didn’t enjoy the grind. The daily work left me drained rather than energized," said Grumet.

Impact on Career and Longevity

Burnout can steal happiness and shorten careers. If you feel emotionally exhausted, you are likely to drop out of the workforce sooner and miss out on opportunities for career growth, health, and goal achievement.

Grumet also poses questions that need to be answered. You might not be able to change jobs instantly, but can you find a way to inject happiness into routines? Can you take on projects that bring joy, build meaningful connections with colleagues, or engage in hobbies and interests outside work to boost your spirits?

These small changes can transform your experience and life. You have trouble keeping your spirits up if you only pursue goals without happiness. Living under pressure will affect both your career and your life. Grumet also suggests self-reflection when you feel burnt out.

"True happiness isn’t found in the next big win. It’s in the small, joyful moments that happen along the way—the process, not the destination. When you focus on these little moments of purpose, the big goals might start to feel less daunting, and the burnout will begin to fade," Grumet suggests.

So, take a step back, redefine your goals, and allow yourself to enjoy the process. This may be the most transformative thing you can do for your career, health, and happiness.
