TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of China Xi Jinping has declined the invitation to visit Brussels in a meeting marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the European Union (EU) and China, Financial Times reported on Sunday, March 16, 2025 as cited by Reuters.

Beijing has informed European Union officials that Prime Minister Li Qiang would meet with the President of the European Council and the European Commission instead of Xi, FT stated, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Chinese Prime Ministers usually attend the EU-China Summit when held in Brussels, while the President hosts in Beijing. However, the European Union wanted Xi to attend to commemorate half a century of relations between Beijing and the bloc, the newspaper reported.

Tensions between Brussels and Beijing have escalated since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The EU has accused China of backing the Kremlin, FT reported. Last year, the EU also imposed tariffs on electric vehicle imports from China.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the EU have not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment.

"Informal discussions are ongoing, both on setting a date for this year's EU-China Summit and the level of representation," an EU official told the newspaper.

While the Chinese ministry was quoted as saying it had no information to offer on the matter.

China, the world's second-largest economy, and the EU, the third-largest, spent much of 2024 squabbling over allegations of overcapacity, illegal subsidies, and dumping in each other's markets.

In October, the EU imposed double-digit tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles after an anti-subsidy investigation, in addition to a 10 percent tariff on standard car imports. The move drew strong protests from Beijing, which in turn, increased barriers to entry for certain EU products such as brandy.
