Yogyakarta Prepares to Anticipate Waste Problems During Christmas, New Year Tourism Surge

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The emergency waste problem in the Yogyakarta Special Region continues to be a significant challenge for local authorities, especially during the Christmas and New Year holidays. According to Mobile Positioning Data (MPD), the number of tourists in the city is expected to reach 3.4 million.

The surge in tourist visits during this year-end period is also reflected in the hotel and accommodation occupancy rate, which has exceeded 72 percent.

Beny Suharsono, secretary of the Yogyakarta regional government, stated that the local government has implemented a series of strategies in collaboration with the Yogyakarta City Government, Sleman Regency, and Bantul Regency to tackle the waste issue.

"To address the waste problem, the strategy includes optimizing waste management at accommodation facilities and tourist destinations," Beny said on Thursday, December 26.

One of the efforts to manage waste by the end of the year involves mobilizing 400 waste trucks throughout December 2024 to transport garbage from Yogyakarta City to Piyungan, an integrated waste management site in Bantul Regency. The site was temporarily closed in May 2024 but has since reopened with limited capacity.

"The movement of these hundreds of waste trucks is equivalent to transporting 2,000 tons of waste," Beny said.

In addition, Beny noted, the Yogyakarta government is optimizing facilities to transfer waste—particularly from Yogyakarta City—to Piyungan by year’s end. "So that when tourists arrive, they will not see piles of garbage, but rather piles of interesting tourist attractions," he said.

Garbage Volume Predicted to Increase

Ahmad Haryoko, Head of the Waste Management Division at the Yogyakarta City Environment Agency (DLH), predicts a 10 percent increase in waste volume during the Christmas and New Year holidays. On normal days, the city generates around 200 tons of waste, but this is expected to rise to 220 tons per day during the holidays.

"Together with the Yogyakarta government, we continue to reduce the waste volume at depots so that they can accommodate the waste during the holidays," he said.

The volume of waste is also closely tied to human mobility. To alleviate congestion in Yogyakarta City, the government is working to disperse tourists more evenly across the region. "We are launching tourism products that we encourage tourists to explore without having to stay in Yogyakarta City," said Aria Nugrahadi, Acting Head of the Yogyakarta Tourism Office.
