TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Coastal Fishery Port (PPP) Gesing in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, officially commenced operations on Tuesday, October 22. As the second-largest port in Gunungkidul after Pantai Sadeng, Gesing Port is poised to become a tourism fishing port.
This projection is underpinned by the port's comprehensive infrastructure, which supports the tourism sector, and the anticipated fish supply it will generate.
Deputy Governor of Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), Paku Alam X, estimated that Gesing Port will supply approximately 5,000 tons of fish per year to the region. The total value of the fish caught from the port is estimated to reach Rp88 billion.
“We are optimistic that the fisheries production in this region will flourish alongside the integrated coastal tourism development in Gunungkidul Regency,” he said on Tuesday.
A Vision for the Indian Ocean Century
Gesing Beach Port is located at the end of a bay, flanked by two natural wave breakers. Facing the southeast side of the Indian Ocean, Gesing Bay is shielded from direct waves, resulting in a low sedimentation rate at the bottom of its waters. This favorable condition minimizes the risk of channel closure and reduces maintenance costs for the port basin and shipping channel.
“Gesing Beach Port embodies Yogyakarta's vision towards the Indian Ocean Century,” Paku Alam X emphasized.
This vision underscores the aspiration to transform Yogyakarta's southern coast into a productive front yard and a pillar of prosperity.
