TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian region of Yogyakarta sees an increase in the number of visitors for the Christmas and New Year holiday seasons this year, with over 1.3 million entering the region.
“The number of tourist visits during the year-end holiday season of 2024 was 1,368,090 people, an increase of 227,321 people compared to the same period in 2023,” said Head of the Tourism Destination Development Division of the Yogyakarta Tourism Office Antarikso Trisno Bawono on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Trisno attributed the increase in visitors last year to the growing number of variety and quality destinations in Yogyakarta, as well as easier access due to the opening of the Prambanan functional toll road.
Sleman records the highest number of visits
According to the Sleman Regency Tourism Office, the region saw over 643 thousand visits during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Meanwhile, in Yogyakarta, several tourist destinations were deemed favorites, including Parangtritis Beach, Taman Sari, Prambanan Temple, Heha Skyview, Drini Park, Breksi Cliff, and Obelix Hilss.
The chair of the Indonesian Tourism Association (GIPI) of Yogyakarta, Bobby Ardyanto Setyo Ajie, said the distribution of tourist accommodation in 2024 was better than the previous year, as tourists were no longer fixated on hotels but also homestays in rural areas and tourist villages.
The 2024 tourist movement
Head of the Tourism Industry Division of the Yogyakarta City Tourism Office, Caesaria Eka Yulianti, explained that the tourist movement statistics throughout 2024 rose by almost 3 million compared to 2023.
“The movement has exceeded the target of 5 million tourists; the data at the end of November has reached 9.5 million people, so we expect tourist movement to surpass 10 million considering the Christmas and New Year holidays, along with the school holidays,” Eka said.
One of the contributing factors to boosting tourist movement in Yogyakarta is the operation of the Prambanan toll road to improve accessibility.
