TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Celebrating the Gerindra Party's 17th anniversary in February 2025, President Prabowo Subianto expressed his desire to overhaul the party leadership. Several politicians have held top positions since the party's founding in 2008, including Ahmad Muzani, now speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
Prabowo weighed several figures from within the party and among his inner circle as potential new secretary-general. One of them was Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, the Defense Minister and Prabowo's friend since their days as cadets at the Indonesian Military Academy in Magelang, Central Java.
Sjafrie's name began circulating strongly among party members as a candidate for the position. "People inside the party have heard his name mentioned since early 2025," said Rahmat Harahap, a Gerindra founder, when asked for confirmation on Friday, October 24, 2025.
Two senior Gerindra Party politicians said Prabowo wanted to improve internal communication by appointing a new secretary-general. According to these sources, cadres often struggle to reach Ahmad Muzani because he does not use a mobile phone. Sjafrie was considered as someone who could fix these communication problems.
