TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 18 passengers from a ferry that capsized in the Mentawai Strait have been found safe. The group included civil servants and a member of the West Sumatra Regional House of Representatives who were traveling with the Regent of Mentawai Regency.
The ferry capsized at around 11:00 AM local time on Monday, July 14, 2025. Initially, the Mentawai Search and Rescue Office reported that several passengers were missing. A joint rescue team searched the area and successfully located all victims.
Director General of Sea Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, Muhammad Masyhud, confirmed that no one was killed in the incident. All passengers who were previously unaccounted for have been found and evacuated to Tuapejat Port.
“The evacuation was carried out using a Basarnas vessel,” Masyhud said in a written statement on Tuesday, July 15.
According to a report from the Class III Port Operator Unit in Sikakap, the vessel was a wooden longboat powered by three 40 HP engines. The ferry departed from Sikakap en route to Tuapejat, passing through a privately operated port called Wisma Lestari.
Masyhud added that the Directorate General of Sea Transportation will continue coordinating with relevant agencies, including the National Transportation Safety Committee, to ensure the investigation proceeds in accordance with existing regulations.
“We are deeply concerned about this incident,” he said.
Mentawai Regent Rinto Wardana Samaloisa suspects that high waves caused the capsizing. His group had passed the ferry about 30 minutes before the incident. Upon arrival in South Sipora, they noticed the ferry was no longer in sight.
Rinto’s group continued their journey to the Sioban Pier in South Sipora by land, but encountered flooding in Saureinu Village. It was during this delay that Rinto was informed the ferry carrying the first group had capsized.
