TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team failed to advance to the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup after losing 1-0 to the Philippines in their final Group B qualifying match at the Manahan Stadium in Solo, Central Java on Saturday night, December 21, 2024.
Garuda were reduced to ten players from the 42nd minute after captain Muhammad Ferarri received a red card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Marselino Ferdinan and his teammates had time to put the Azkals' defense under pressure early in the second half.
However, their efforts to find the back of the net fell short. On the other hand, the Philippines finally scored in the 63rd minute through a penalty kick by Bjorn Martin Kristensen. Japanese referee Koji Takasaki pointed to the spot after Dony Tri Pamungkas committed a handball.
The result dropped Indonesia to third place in Group B with four points. Meanwhile, the Philippines, who picked up three points from the match, moved up to second place with six points.
The Philippines advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup as runners-up in Group B. The Azkals will accompany Vietnam, who qualified as group champions with 10 points after a 5-0 thrashing of Myanmar in their final group match.
The two semi-finalists from Group A are Thailand and Singapore. These two teams were the first to qualify, as the final group match was played a day earlier.
