TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor candidate number 2, Dharma Pongrekun, proposes converting rainwater into clean water as a solution to tackle the water crisis in Jakarta. He introduced the idea when asked about solutions to Governor of Jakarta Province Regulation Number 16 of 2020, which limits the rights of residents to water by requiring them to prove land ownership.
As for Governor Regulation of Jakarta Number 16/2020 regarding procedures for water connection and use of drinking water. Dharma initiated the 'monkey cheek pond' program, which is a dry reservoir that functions to collect floodwaters from West Java.
"It can be utilized to replace rainwater storage," said Dharma in the third Jakarta gubernatorial election debate held at Hotel Sultan, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, November 17, 2024. "Because this is fresh water, it can be turned into clean water by using technology connected to piping to the regional drinking water company."
According to Dharma, the monkey cheek pond will be built in child-friendly public spaces (RPTRA), basketball courts, or tennis courts. He mentioned that by constructing this rainwater collection pond, residents would no longer need to buy gallon water and worry about the prohibition of using groundwater.
Furthermore, Dharma mentioned that the Regional Water Company (PDAM) could provide technology so that residents do not need to buy gallon water. However, he stated that the issue lies in the lack of political will from local governments to realize this.
In addition to the monkey cheek pond, Dharma also stated that he will normalize 13 rivers in Jakarta and carry out naturalization. "This way, the water will be suitable for consumption," he said.
The theme of tonight's third debate is 'Urban Planning and Climate Change'. This evening's debate is the final one before the campaign period ends on Sunday, November 24.
The voting will take place on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Independent candidate pair Dharma Pongrekun-Kun Wardhana will compete against pair number 1 Ridwan Kamil-Suswono and pair number 3 Pramono Anung-Rano Karno.
