TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Balikesir Province in northwestern Turkey on Sunday, August 10, 2025. At least one person has died, and 29 others have been injured.

According to ABC, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said an elderly woman died shortly after being rescued from the rubble of a building in the town of Sindirgi. Four others in the same building were successfully evacuated unharmed.

Yerlikaya mentioned that 16 buildings had collapsed in the area. Most of these buildings were abandoned and unused. Two mosque minarets also fell.

Television footage showed rescue teams asking the crowd to be silent so they could listen for signs of life under the debris.

Epicenter in Sindirgi

According to a report from NBC News, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in Sindirgi, a city about 200 kilometers south of Istanbul with a population of over 16 million. The tremors were also felt in Istanbul.

Sindirgi Mayor Serkan Sak told the television station HaberTurk that rescue teams are still trying to reach two other individuals from the collapsed building. In the village of Golcuk, several houses and mosque minarets also collapsed.

Condition of Victims and Evacuation Process

Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu stated that four victims are being treated in the hospital, but none are in critical condition. Balikesir Mayor Ahmet Akin also said, "Our hope is to get through this without any loss of life."

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD) reported that the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one of magnitude 4.6. AFAD urged people not to enter damaged buildings.

In response to the disaster, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote, "May God protect our country from any kind of disaster." He also expressed prayers for the recovery of the affected residents.

Previously, in 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. The same earthquake killed about 6,000 people in northern Syria.
