TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit one of Tibet's holiest cities on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, 2025, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. Reuters reported that the quake caused significant damage to buildings in and around Shigatse and sent people rushing into the streets in neighboring Nepal and India.

The earthquake struck at 09:05 local time, with a depth of 10 kilometers, the report said, updating the initial estimate of 6.9 in magnitude.

Video footage from the nearby town of Lhatse showed the fronts of shops destroyed, with debris scattered across the streets.

Reuters was able to verify the location by matching nearby buildings, windows, street layouts, and signs with satellite imagery and street views. The exact date could not be independently verified.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, about 400 kilometers away, prompting residents to exit their homes.

The quake was also felt in the northern Indian state of Bihar, which borders Nepal. As walls shook, people rushed out of their homes and apartments to safer, open areas. So far, Indian officials have reported no casualties or significant damage.

In 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu, Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring thousands in the country’s deadliest earthquake to date.
