TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 97 Indonesian citizens have been affected by wildfires in Los Angeles, the United States, the Indonesian Consulate General or KJRI in Los Angeles reported.
In a written statement quoted by Tempo on Saturday, January 11, 2025, the Indonesian Consulate General said it had issued an early warning of the fire via social media. This information was also disseminated to the Indonesian community in Southern California through various communication channels, including WhatsApp groups for Indonesian citizens and students.
As of Thursday afternoon, January 9, 2025, at 4 p.m. Los Angeles time, the affected Indonesian community had complied with the evacuation orders issued by local authorities. They are currently in shelters provided by the local government in Southern California.
These Indonesian citizens are spread throughout the Pasadena area, totaling 60 people, Altadena 20 people, Sylmar 10 people, and Calabasas 7 people. "The Indonesian Consulate General continues to monitor the condition of the Indonesian citizens and ensure that they receive the assistance and protection they need," the KJRI said.
Consular and immigration services remain operational amid this situation. In addition, the Consulate General is prepared to follow evacuation guidelines issued by the Los Angeles County government should the situation worsen.
"We urge the Indonesian people to remain calm, monitor the development of the situation, and follow the instructions of the local authorities," the KJRI said.
The situation has reportedly started to improve in some areas, but the potential for danger remains. The weather forecast indicates no rain for the next week and the potential for high winds remains.
