TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has admitted that some of its members have engaged in online gambling. Head of the Legal Information Center (Kapuspenkum) Harli Siregar clarified that the amounts involved were minimal, typically less than Rp5,000.
“Yes, but the amount is not significant,” Harli said at the AGO Office in South Jakarta on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He clarified the statement by Attorney General ST Burhanuddin during a meeting with the House of Representatives' (DPR) Legal Commission. The Attorney General had mentioned that some members had engaged in online gambling activities, but the context of these activities was misinterpreted.
“Frankly, members are participating [in online gambling] and it’s just for fun at about five thousand,” Burhanuddin said.
Harli said the statement might have been misinterpreted by the public. “What he (the Attorney General) meant was not that many members were involved, but rather that about games with bets of Rp5,000 or Rp10,000, not the number of individuals.”
He claimed that all AGO members found to be involved in such activities face severe administrative or even criminal penalties as the institution adopts a zero-tolerance policy.
Recently, reports suggested that many police or military personnel are involved in online gambling practices. One high-profile case involved a policewoman who set her husband on fire due to his addiction to online gambling.
The involvement of law enforcement personnel in online gambling raises concerns about the integrity of these institutions and their ability to maintain law and order.
