TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The global craze for ultra-thin smartphones appears to be losing momentum. Following Samsung’s decision to discontinue the Galaxy S26 Edge due to sluggish sales of the S25 Edge, Apple is now facing a similar setback with its iPhone Air model.
According to a Gizmochina report on Sunday, October 19, 2025, which cited data from Mizuho Securities Japan, Apple plans to cut iPhone Air production by around one million units this year after demand fell short of expectations, despite the device’s ultra-slim design and flagship-grade specifications.
To compensate, Apple will ramp up production of other iPhone 17 series models, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, by roughly two million units. The company’s total iPhone 17 output is projected to rise from 88 million to 94 million units by early 2026.
Analysts note that both the iPhone Air and Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge share a common weakness: their thinner profiles come at the cost of smaller batteries and fewer camera features, making them less attractive to mainstream consumers.
In Western markets, the iPhone Air has reportedly trailed behind other iPhone 17 variants in sales, while in China, an initial sales surge was followed by a sharp slowdown.
Industry observers say Apple’s production shift should not be seen as a failure but as a recalibration to align innovation with consumer preference. Still, the move underscores a key market reality: buyers are not yet ready to sacrifice comfort, endurance, and performance for the sake of slimness.
