TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team will take on Thailand in the semifinal of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 8:00 PM WIB (Indonesian Western Time). This match will be a crucial test for the Garuda Muda squad, which has been impressive in the group stage.
Indonesia's Chance Against Thailand
The clash between Indonesia and Thailand will be an intriguing battle, given the teams' long-standing rivalry. However, it is worth noting that the Garuda Muda has never lost to Thailand in their last two encounters in the AFF U-23 Cup.
In the 2019 edition, Indonesia successfully lifted the championship trophy after defeating the War Elephants in the final. Back then, under the guidance of Indra Sjafri, the team won 2-1. Four years later, they met again in the semifinal. Indonesia, coached by Shin Tae-yong, humiliated Thailand in front of their supporters with a 3-1 victory.
With the momentum from their recent victory and a positive performance trend in the group stage, Indonesia is believed to have higher confidence. Additionally, playing at home with full support from the fans at SUGBK is considered an added value for Jens Raven and his team.
From a technical standpoint, Thailand is expected to focus on ball possession, while Indonesia will rely on speed in counterattacks and explosiveness on the wings to penetrate the opponent's defense.
Nevertheless, Indonesia's new coach, Gerald Vanenburg, is expected to continue the Garuda Muda's positive record against Thailand. Judging from the three group stage matches, Jens Raven and his team still have a lot of work to do.
In terms of finishing chances, Indonesian players must be more clinical. Facing a strong opponent like Thailand, every opportunity is invaluable. Failing to capitalize on goal-scoring chances could come back to haunt them.
Head-to-Head Record of Indonesia U-23 vs Thailand U-23
In their last five matches in the U-23 category, each team has secured two victories and one draw. Indonesia's latest victory occurred on August 24, 2023, when Garuda Muda defeated Thailand 3-1.
Here is the last match record of Indonesia U-23 vs Thailand U-23:
- August 24, 2023 - Thailand U-23 1-3 Indonesia U-23.
- May 19, 2022 - Thailand U-23 1-0 Indonesia U-23.
- November 26, 2019 - Thailand U-23 0-2 Indonesia U-23.
- March 22, 2019 - Thailand U-23 4-0 Indonesia U-23.
