Bangladesh Air Force Jet Crashes into School, Killing 27 People

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A trainer aircraft belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force crashed onto a college campus and a school in the capital, Dhaka on Monday, July 21, 2025. The incident killed at least 27 people, including the pilot, the military said in a statement.

The F-7 BGI aircraft crashed at the Milestone School and College campus in the Uttara area of Dhaka at around 1 p.m. on Monday. At that time, students were either taking exams or attending regular classes.

"The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammed Toukir Islam, had worked hard to divert the aircraft from densely populated areas to sparsely populated ones," the Bangladesh Air Force said in a statement quoted by Al Jazeera.

The cause of the accident will be investigated. The military stated that 171 people were injured in the incident.

Most of the injured victims are between eight and 14 years old, said Mohammad Maruf Islam, the joint director of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where many victims were being treated.

Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the chief adviser of the Ministry of Health, told reporters on Tuesday morning that at least 27 people were confirmed dead in the accident.

Video recordings after the accident showed a large fire near the grassy yard. Thick smoke billowed into the sky. Many people watched from a distance.

Firefighters sprayed water onto the wreckage of the destroyed aircraft. The aircraft appeared to have crashed into the side of a building, damaging the iron fence and creating a large hole in the structure.

Videos on social media showed people screaming and crying as others tried to comfort them. "When I was picking up my children and heading toward the gate, I realized something was coming from behind. I heard an explosion. When I looked back, all I saw was fire and smoke," said Masud Tarik, a teacher at the school, to Reuters.

Interim government Muhammad Yunus announced a national day of mourning on Tuesday. Yunus expressed deep sorrow and condolences for the incident in a post on X.

"The losses suffered by the air force the students, parents, teachers, staff, and others in this accident cannot be repaired," he said. Yunus also announced that an emergency hotline had been activated at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery after the accident.
