TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is another attraction presented by Yogyakarta Station at the end of this year. In addition to the five-meter-high Santa Claus statue decoration, there is also a batik exhibition that you can visit.
PT KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta together with KAI held a Batik Roadshow to enliven the Christmas and New Year holidays or Nataru at Yogyakarta Station. The batik exhibition with the theme "Exploring Batik, Caring for History", was held from December 21-31, 2024, in the Hall of the east gate of the station.
The activity, which collaborated with Lawasan Batik, aims to preserve Indonesia's cultural heritage while introducing the richness of batik to the wider community.
Executive Vice President of Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Bambang Respationo, said that this exhibition brings together the history of railway transportation with the richness of Nusantara culture through 30 collections of Vorstenlanden batik that are full of meaning.
Vorstenlanden is the term for the kingdom areas that were under the rule of four monarchies that were part of the Mataram Sultanate. Namely, Kasunanan Surakarta, Kasultanan Yogyakarta, Kadipaten Mangkunegaran and Kadipaten Pakualaman.
"We are proud to be part of the Menelisik Batik, Merawat Sejarah exhibition. Yogyakarta Station as a cultural gateway is the right place to educate the public about the importance of preserving batik as a world heritage," said Bambang Respationo in his remarks at the ceremonial opening of the Batik Roadshow, Sunday, December 22, 2024.
"In addition, Yogyakarta Station is a strategic public space that not only has an aesthetic design but is also historic," he added.
Yogyakarta Station Also Preserves Culture
As one of the oldest stations, Yogyakarta Station is a witness to Yogyakarta's cultural and economic journey. Trains are not only a means of transportation, but also a link between various traditions, including batik, which is now recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
"With this exhibition, Daop 6 also invites customers to explore the deep relationship between the history of transportation, natural wealth, and Batik craft art," said Bambang.
The first railway line in Indonesia, built in 1867 by the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM), connected Semarang and Yogyakarta. This line played an important role in transporting agricultural products, including indigofera (indigo), one of the natural dyes that was a leading export commodity at that time. This blue dye is closely related to Vorstenlanden batik, which features classic motifs with symbolic colors.
Bambang Respationo also said that Daop 6 invites people who want to use the station's non-commercial public space for free to carry out non-commercial activities such as exhibitions, campaigns, socialization, and others.
"We hope that the Daop 6 Yogyakarta stations can continue to present happiness and new things that are useful for customers and of course make train travel more memorable," he said.
Chairperson I of the Indonesian Batik Lovers Association (PPBI) Laretna T. Adishakti said that this exhibition is a reminder that batik is not just textile art, but a representation of history, economy, nature, and culture.
Through Yogyakarta and Lempuyangan Stations, we can also understand how trains help preserve and disseminate this cultural wealth, connecting Yogyakarta with various other regions, and strengthening the nation's identity.
"I appreciate all parties involved in organizing this exhibition. Hopefully this event can inspire the younger generation to continue to maintain and develop our cultural heritage, while reminding us of the importance of collaboration between transportation, nature, culture, and history," said Laretna.
The Batik Roadshow with KAI will be enlivened by several activities including the Batik Exhibition, then there is also a Batik Fashion Show, Nyanting and Healing, Jogja Walking Tour, and others.
