TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has announced that there was no violation of election laws in a video featuring President Prabowo Subianto encouraging support for the Ahmad Luthfi-Taj Yasin Maimoen pair in the Central Java gubernatorial election.
“There is no evidence of election law violations, whether administrative or criminal,” Bawaslu Chair Rahmat Bagja announced during a press conference broadcasted via the Bawaslu RI YouTube channel on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
Bawaslu's decision was based on an initial investigation, which determined that the former defense minister's participation in the campaign was lawful under Article 70 paragraph (2) of Law and Government Regulation Number 32 of 2018. This regulation outlines the procedures for resignation from political office and leave during election campaigns.
Bagja further explained that the President's leave requirement for campaign participation did not apply in this case, as the video was recorded on a Sunday, November 3, 2024. “The timing of the video does not violate any legal provisions,” he clarified.
The controversy arose on Saturday, November 9, 2024, when Ahmad Luthfi’s Instagram account @luthfiyasinofficial posted a video featuring President Prabowo Subianto, Ahmad Luthfi, and Taj Yasin. In the video, Prabowo urged the people of Central Java to vote for the Ahmad Luthfi-Taj Yasin pair supported by the Indonesian Advanced Coalition (KIM). He expressed his confidence in the pair's ability to lead Central Java, highlighting Ahmad Luthfi's experience in the police force and Taj Yasin's tenure as Deputy Governor.
Bawaslu's decision was based on Article 1 number 21 of Law Number 1 of 2015 as amended by Law Number 6 of 2020 and Constitutional Court Decision Number 52/PUU-XXII/2024, as well as Article 1 number 12 of the General Election Commission (KPU) Regulation Number 13 of 2024.
Bagja emphasized that the President's campaign activities were conducted within legal boundaries, as he did not use state facilities or coerce government officials to support a specific party. “These are the legal limits set by the law and the Constitutional Court,” he concluded.
