TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 4.3 earthquake rattled Pangandaran Regency in West Java and its surrounding areas on Wednesday afternoon, January 8, 2025, at 11:41 a.m. local time. Hartanto, the head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region II Tangerang, said the quake’s epicenter was located at sea, 81 kilometers southwest of Pangandaran Regency, with coordinates of 8.12 South Latitude and 107.89 East Longitude.
“The quake originated from a depth of 25 kilometers,” he said in a written report following the incident.
He explained that this was a shallow quake caused by the faulting or shifting of plates on the seabed. Based on the BMKG shock level map and public reports, tremors were felt in various locations, including Garut, Cikelet, Singajaya, Pamengpeuk, Cikalong, Cijulang, and as far as Karanganyar.
According to Hartanto, the quake’s intensity as measured on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale was II-III in most areas. This meant that the vibrations were felt by several people indoors, causing light objects hanging from ceilings to sway. The community in Simpenan District, Sukabumi, also reported feeling the shaking with an intensity of II MMI.
The BMKG team confirmed that there were no reports of structural damage to buildings resulting from the earthquake. “As of 11:57 a.m., BMKG monitoring has not detected any aftershock activity,” stated Hartanto.
He urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. “Ensure that official information is obtained solely from BMKG through verified official communication channels,” he underlined.
