TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The perigee phenomenon, where the moon is at its nearest point to the earth, could trigger tidal flooding from July 15 to 22, 2025, across several Indonesian regions. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning as the floods could disrupt port activities, residential areas, and inland fisheries.
In the northern coastal areas of West Java, according to the BMKG early warning, tidal flooding is likely to occur between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. Some locations vulnerable to the floods include Legonkulon and Sukasari in Subang Regency, as well as Kandanghaur, Pasekan, and Indramayu in the Indramayu Regency. Other locations are Mundu, Losari, and Gebang in Cirebon Regency, as well as Lemahwungkuk and Kejaksan in the city of Cirebon.
The timing of the tidal flooding may differ in each region. Floods may sweep through Belawan, North Sumatra, on July 23-27, 2025. For Batam's coast in the Riau Islands, the BMKG predicts that floods will occur in two periods, namely on July 15-17 and July 25-28, 2025. The potential is also present on the coast of Padang and Padang Pariaman on July 20-22.
On the southern coast of Pandeglang and Lebak in Banten, there is a similar chance that the coast will flood on July 15, and July 19-28. Then on the northern coast of Tangerang on July 20-26, the northern coast of Serang on July 23-25, the coast of Surabaya on July 22-27, East Surabaya on July 23-26, and then in Ketanget on July 24-25.
The impact of the perigee will also occur on the coast of Lombok and Bima on July 15-16, as well as on all coasts of East Nusa Tenggara on July 15 and July 19-21.
The BMKG also warns of tidal flooding in South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan from July 15-30, 2025; West Kalimantan from July 23-27; North Sulawesi on July 25-26; and Maluku and South Papua from July 15-30, 2025.
