BMKG Predicts Widespread Heavy Rain in West Java During First Week of December

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted the weather for a week, December 2 to 8, 2024, in West Java with the potential of widespread heavy rain influenced by several factors. The increased supply of water vapor supports the formation of convective clouds and the occurrence of rain in parts of West Java.

According to the Head of the BMKG Climatology Station in West Java, Rakhmat Prasetia, sea surface temperatures in some Indonesian waters are still relatively warm, the Negative Dipole Mode is still consistently ongoing, and low-frequency atmospheric waves as well as active Kelvin Waves in some parts of West Java.

In addition, cyclonic circulation systems are predicted to still be potential in the western to southwestern Indian Ocean and in other regions in the western and central parts of Indonesia which may result in wind bends and wind convergence around the West Java region. 'Local atmospheric lability ranging from light to strong supports convective processes in some parts of West Java,' he said in a written statement on Sunday, December 1, 2024.

BMKG predicts that light to moderate rain is still potential in some parts of West Java, while the potential for moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds on Monday, December 2, 2024, includes Depok, Bogor, Bekasi, Karawang, Sukabumi, Cianjur, Purwakarta, Subang, and the city of Cimahi, West Bandung Regency, Bandung City and Regency (Greater Bandung), Sumedang, Majalengka, Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Indramayu, Cirebon, Ciamis, Banjar, and Pangandaran.

The potential for moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds throughout the West Java region is predicted by BMKG to continue until Friday. Meanwhile, on Saturday it is predicted to only affect some areas, namely Bogor, Sukabumi, Cianjur, Bandung Regency, Bekasi Regency, Subang, Indramayu, Tasikmalaya Regency, Kuningan, and Pangandaran. While on Sunday in Bogor Regency, Sukabumi Regency, Cianjur, Bandung Regency, Subang, Garut, Tasikmalaya Regency, and Ciamis.

In the previous week based on BMKG's observations, heavy to very heavy rain hit parts of Bogor Regency and City, Depok City, Bekasi Regency and City, Karawang, Sukabumi Regency and City, Cianjur, Purwakarta, Subang, Sumedang, Majalengka, Kuningan, Cirebon Regency, Indramayu, Bandung Regency and City, West Bandung Regency, Garut, Tasikmalaya Regency, Ciamis, and Pangandaran.
