TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has set up special tents to cater to vulnerable evacuees of the ongoing eruption of Mount Lewotobi at the Konga and Lewolaga refugee posts. The initiative aims to improve the quality of care for groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, nursing mothers, people with disabilities, and children.
BNPB’s Deputy for Emergency Management, Major General Lukmansyah, provided updates during a press briefing on Wednesday, November 13. "All posts are performing well, especially in meeting the specific needs of evacuees," he stated. "The construction of these special tents ensures that vulnerable groups receive tailored services in health, nutrition, and psychosocial protection."
At the Konga refugee post, eight tents have been set up: six for pregnant women and the elderly, each equipped with four velbeds, two mattresses, and one folding mattress, alongside two health tents containing four velbeds each. In Lewolaga, two tents have been dedicated to pregnant women, with an additional tent for nursing mothers.
This initiative follows directives from Vice President Gibran Rakabuming, who visited BNPB on Tuesday, November 12. He emphasized the importance of categorizing evacuation sites to ensure appropriate health services and basic needs for each group. "Evacuation sites must differentiate between general populations, the elderly, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children to provide specialized care," said the Vice President.
The eruption has prompted swift evacuation efforts, with thousands of residents from Wulanggitang, Ile Bura, and parts of Sikka Regency being relocated to safer areas. The local government, in collaboration with BNPB and other agencies, has been working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of affected communities.
With these measures in place, BNPB hopes to provide comprehensive support to evacuees, focusing on those most at risk.
