TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Highlighting the sufferings in Palestine, the BRICS economic group adopted a joint declaration stressing the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

This call responds to Israel’s ongoing offensive in the enclave, resulting in at least 43,000 Palestinians killed and over 100,000 people injured.

"We stress the urgent need for an immediate comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and detainees from both sides who are being held illegally, and the unimpeded, sustained and large-scale flow of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, as well as an end to all aggressive actions," reads the Kazan Declaration on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, as quoted from Antara.

The declaration expresses the deep concerns of BRICS countries about the deteriorating situation and humanitarian crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories as a result of Israel's military operations.

Furthermore, the declaration published by the Kremlin also calls for the full implementation of relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions and welcomes the efforts of Egypt and Qatar, as well as other regional and international efforts, to promptly achieve a ceasefire and accelerate the distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

"We also express our alarm that further escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip risks increasing tensions, extremism and extremely harmful consequences at the regional and global levels," as stated in the declaration.

In addition, BRICS countries, through the declaration, also urge all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint and avoid escalatory actions and provocative statements.

Moreover, the declaration also notes the provisional measures of the International Court of Justice in the proceedings initiated by South Africa against Israel. BRICS also reaffirms its support for Palestine's full membership in the U.N. in the context of a two-state solution based on international law.

For information, the BRICS Summit includes founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as recent additions including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Kazan on Wednesday to attend the summit as a guest.
