BRIN Warns of Extreme Weather in Early December Fueld by 3 Atmospheric Waves

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is bracing for potential extreme weather conditions in early December, as a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, has identified a confluence of three atmospheric waves.

Erma explained that the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin wave, and Rossby wave are currently active in the southern part of Indonesia. The MJO, in particular, is playing a dominant role in driving massive convective cloud clusters from the Indian Ocean towards the Indonesian archipelago.

“The MJO, reinforced by the Kelvin wave, is generating very strong westerly winds from the Indian Ocean towards Indonesia,” Erma told Tempo on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Rossby wave, originating from the Pacific Ocean, is moving eastward towards Indonesia. The interaction between the MJO and Rossby waves can trigger the formation of vortices, such as the one that recently developed in the South China Sea (Borneo vortex), near the Malaysian Peninsula, and has contributed to severe floods in Malaysia and Thailand.

Erma warned that the combined influence of these atmospheric waves could lead to persistent rainfall in various regions of Indonesia, including the west coast of West Sumatra and South Sumatra, the north and south coasts of Java, and parts of Kalimantan.

“Persistent rainfall can also occur in areas near the Malacca Strait, such as Batam, Tanjungpinang, Bintan, Bangka Belitung, and the eastern coast of North Sumatra,” she added.

Given the long-lasting impact of these weather disturbances, which is expected to persist until the end of December, authorities are urged to maintain a high level of alert and implement necessary mitigation measures.
