TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Buck Moon phenomenon will be visible tonight in several countries. This full moon will appear very low in the sky after sunset. Quoting Space on Monday, July 7, the full moon will appear at 16:36 EDT/Eastern Daylight Time (20:36 GMT/Greenwich Mean Time) today, on July 10, 2025.

"But it won't be visible until it rises above the southern horizon at sunset in your local time zone," as stated.

The name Buck Moon comes from the observations of nature and seasons by the indigenous people of North America. Since ancient times, the local community has named the full moon based on natural phenomena or animal activities.

In the context of the full moon, during the Buck Moon, male deer (bucks) are believed to begin regrowing their antlers, which they shed the previous season. The Buck Moon is also known as the Thunder Moon, referring to the summer storms that often hit parts of the U.S. in July.

In addition to the U.S., Buck Moon can also be seen in India at 19:42 local time, with the best time to witness it being 30-60 minutes after the moon rises. This full moon can also be watched in the sky of several European countries.

It is worth noting that Buck Moon appears when the moon is in the opposite position from the sun, making it appear fully illuminated from Earth. The moon appears low in the sky because of its proximity to the summer solstice. When the sun is at its highest point in the sky during the day, the moon follows a low path at night.

In the Space review, the effect of Buck Moon is said to be more extreme this year due to a phenomenon known as "Major Lunar Standstill." "This occurs every 18.6 years, when the sun's gravity drags the moon's tilted orbit into its most extreme inclination relative to Earth's celestial equator," as stated by Space. Depending on the time of year, this position can make the moon appear very high or low in the sky.
