TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli attack on Palestinian civilians near a medical center in Gaza on Thursday, July 10, 2025, resulted in 16 fatalities, including children, and numerous injuries, according to local health authorities. This incident occurred as ceasefire negotiations continue without the anticipated breakthroughs.
Khalil al-Deqran, a spokesperson for the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, as quoted by CNA, said that Israel had targeted a medical facility and that six of the victims were children. He added that many of the injured sustained severe head and chest wounds.
At the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, where the victims were brought, Samah al-Nouri recounted that her daughter was killed in the morning attack after visiting the clinic for a sore throat.
"They hit her with a shell. Her brother went to check and he said they all died. What did they do? What's their fault? She was only getting treatment in a medical facility. Why did they kill them?" she tearfully asked.
The Israeli military claimed to have targeted a Palestinian fighter who participated in the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. They acknowledged reports of civilian injuries and stated that the incident is currently under review.
Verified footage from Thursday depicted scenes of carnage, with the bodies of the dead and injured, mostly women and children, lying in pools of blood amid dust. Screaming people surrounded motionless children on stretchers, also in pools of blood.
Condemnation and Ongoing Crisis
Israeli attacks on Palestinian hospitals and health facilities, along with the detention of medical personnel and restrictions on medical supplies, have drawn condemnation from the United Nations (UN).
The UN humanitarian agency (OCHA) reported in May that it had documented at least 686 attacks affecting health services in Gaza since the war began.
The attack in Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip occurred while Israeli and Hamas negotiators were holding talks with mediators in Qatar. These negotiations aimed to achieve a proposed 60-day ceasefire and a hostage release agreement, with the ultimate goal of establishing a lasting ceasefire. However, a senior Israeli official stated on Wednesday that an agreement is unlikely to be reached within the next week or two.
Dwindling fuel supplies, due to Israel's total blockade on aid trucks entering Gaza, risk causing further disruptions in the remaining semi-functional hospitals. This includes critical equipment like incubators at the neonatal unit of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, according to doctors there.
"We are forced to place four, five, or sometimes three premature babies in one incubator," said Dr. Mohammed Abu Selmia, the hospital's director, adding that the premature babies are now in critical condition.
Peace Negotiations
U.S. President Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week to discuss Gaza amid reports that Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas are close to reaching a U.S.-mediated ceasefire proposal after 21 months of war.
Israeli officials in Washington accompanying Netanyahu indicated that if both sides agree to the ceasefire proposal, Israel will use that time to offer a permanent ceasefire that requires Hamas to disarm. If Hamas refuses, the Israeli unnamed official said they will proceed with military operations in Gaza.
A Palestinian official, however, said that the negotiations in Qatar are in crisis, and disputed issues, including whether Israel will continue to occupy part of Gaza after the ceasefire, remain unresolved.
Both sides had previously agreed to a ceasefire in January. However, Israel staunchly rejected the previously agreed permanent ceasefire. Israel resumed its military attacks in March, halting all aid supplies to Gaza and evacuating Palestinian civilians from the northern area of the small territory.
Israel's military campaign in Gaza has now killed more than 57,700 people, mostly women and children. The attacks have destroyed most of the area and displaced the majority of its population from their homes.
