TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) reported that some of the post-Gen-Z generation or children under 12 years old are active internet users in the country. Currently, 221 million people, or 79.5 percent of the Indonesian population, are connected to the internet.

Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid said that the post-Gen-Z generation was born in the digital era. "Currently, 9.17 percent of internet users come from this age group," she said during the Internet Security Day 2025 event at the Komdigi Ministry Office in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

According to her, these children are growing up with widespread access to the online world but have not yet received adequate protection. Data shows that 22 percent of children do not comply with the internet usage duration set by their parents.

"This reflects the great attraction of the digital world for children, and without supervision, they can easily get lost in this digital space," she said.

The Komdigi Ministry's records also show that 13 percent of children create secret accounts unknown to their parents with the ability to create these accounts independently.

This internet usage issue has prompted the drafting of regulations to limit social media use for children. Meutya stated that the drafting of the regulation is nearing completion and will be announced soon. "It's already over 90 percent complete. So, we can officially announce it soon," she said.

Meutya explained that the new regulation will not directly restrict children's access to the internet but will provide parents with greater control through permission settings. She also emphasized that there will be no sanctions for parents or children. "Sanctions will be given to electronic system providers (PSEs) who violate this regulation."
