TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on all countries to uphold “sovereign equality” and emphasized that no country can lecture another on human rights.

Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council via video link on Monday, Wang said the current international situation is “complex and intertwined,” while the post-World War II international order and global human rights governance face new challenges, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

He urged countries to uphold “sovereign equality” and protect the “the original aspirations of global human rights governance.

“Only a path of human rights development rooted in a country's specific national conditions and responsive to the needs of its people can lead to broader prospects,”  Wang said.

Wang also called for greater participation, decision-making, and benefit-sharing among all countries, with greater attention to the voices and demands of the Global South.

He stressed the importance of respecting international law and strengthening the foundations of global human rights governance, while calling on all countries to uphold the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs.

“All parties must resolutely reject words and deeds that create double standards in the name of human rights,” he said.

In addition, Wang encouraged the strengthening of multilateralism and international cooperation to address global human rights governance challenges, including new issues such as artificial intelligence, climate change, and racial discrimination.

He asserted that the right to development must be placed at the center of the multilateral human rights agenda so that the progress achieved is tangible, inclusive, and accessible to all parties.

Wang added that Beijing will continue to develop “whole-process people's democracy” to ensure that “China’s modernization can benefit all people more extensively and equitably,” as the country's 15th Five-Year Plan begins this year.

China, Wang continued, is ready to work with all countries to promote shared development and prosperity, uphold international justice and equality, protect shared human values, and build a community with a shared future for humankind.
