TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 8:05 Jakarta time.
The epicenter was located at the coordinates of 28.56 North latitude and 87.47 East longitude, precisely 157 kilometers southwest of Shigatse China, 236 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, Nepal, with a depth of 25 kilometers.
“The Xizang earthquake is a type of shallow earthquake triggered by the collision of the Eurasian Plate with the Indian Plate. This earthquake has a normal fault movement,” said BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono in a written message on Tuesday, January 7.
BMKG analysis shows that the earthquake did not affect Indonesia's territory. “Therefore, people in the Indonesian regions are advised to remain calm,” he said.
This earthquake affected several countries, such as Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Bhutan, and China.
As quoted from Reuters, at least 53 people had been killed as a result of the earthquake, while 62 injured, on the Tibetan side. Chinese President Xi Jinping said all-out search and rescue efforts should be carried out to minimize casualties, properly resettle the affected people, and ensure a safe and warm winter.
