TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - It's not just the train that is packed with passengers during the busy Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holidays in Yogyakarta this time. The movement of people and tourists traveling by bus transportation has also started to increase. As happened at the Giwangan Yogyakarta Main Terminal this weekend, December 20-21, 2024.

Supervisor of the Giwangan Yogyakarta Main Terminal Service Unit, Sigit Saryanto said that during the Nataru holiday period, the number of bus passengers is estimated to increase by up to 10 percent.

"Since December 20, there has been an increase in passengers of around five percent, we estimate the peak increase in passengers will occur on December 22-23, reaching 10 percent," said Sigit, Saturday, December 21, 2024.

Sigit revealed that the number of passengers during the Christmas and New Year holidays could reach 223,000 people in one day. They depart from terminals in Yogyakarta to various destinations such as Surabaya, Denpasar, Jakarta, Lampung, Bengkulu, and Palembang.

"During this busy period, we will continue to hold ramp check services. So if the bus that is checked does not pass the roadworthiness test, we ask the company to also prepare a replacement fleet. The replacement reserve bus can use a tourist bus, by issuing an incidental permit, so that prospective passengers are not stranded because their bus has problems," he added.

The number of incoming buses increases

Head of the Yogyakarta City Transportation Agency Agus Arif Nugroho said that entering the Christmas and New Year holiday period, buses entering Yogyakarta have started to increase. Not only from monitoring at the terminal. But also at the official government Special Parking Area (TKP). "This week, there are an average of around 100 buses entering the official special parking area," said Arif.

However, said Arif, from monitoring in the field, the buses that fill the official parking locations are mostly still communal activities, both schools and community groups. Only during the Christmas and New Year holidays, the school student groups will shift to family groups.

The Head of the Senopati Yogyakarta Special Parking Area Management, Harjito, said that currently the spike in the number of buses entering and leaving is still under control. "The estimated peak number of buses entering will be next Sunday, the parking lot is full and we have to reject them, divert them to locations that can still accommodate them," he said.

Head of the Yogyakarta Police Traffic Unit's Guarding, Escort and Patrol Arrangement Unit, Inspector One Jayeng Hadi Harjasa, said that traffic flow engineering has not been implemented at this time because the situation is still relatively mobile. "There will still be traffic engineering but it will be adjusted to the latest developments in the field," said Jayeng.
