TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s low-cost airline Citilink officially launches a new route from Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma airport bound for Gatot Soebroto Airport in Way Kanan, Lampung. The inaugural flight took place on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, with scheduled flights twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday. The flight uses ATR72 Series 600 aircraft.
Head of the Airport Operator Unit of Silampari, Wachyu Setiawan, who also oversees the Gatot Soebroto Airport service unit, believes that the new route will support people’s mobility and economic growth in the region.
"Through Citilink’s operation, the connectivity and flight services to and from Way Kanan will bring widespread positive impact in the region,” said Wachyu in a written statement quoted on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
The prospect is bolstered by the presence of seven regencies around the airport, both in Lampung and South Sumatra provinces, with a population of around three million. Additionally, the area serves as the center of various large-scale industries, ranging from plantations to mining.
Aside from supporting the industrial and economic sectors, the new flight route from Jakarta to Lampung is expected to facilitate umrah and hajj pilgrimage, as well as tourist travel. Wachyu added that the growing tourist attractions in the surrounding regencies boost air travel as well.
Gatot Soebroto Airport currently has a runway length of 2,100 meters and a width of 40 meters, as well as a terminal area of 300 square meters. With the existing potential, Wachyu is optimistic that the flight operations in Way Kanan will enhance the accessibility and economy of the region.
"In the future, synergy between the local government, Ministry of Transportation, and other stakeholders needs to be bolstered continuously to develop and improve air transportation services at Gatot Soebroto Airport," said Wachyu.
With this new Citilink flight route, the people of Way Kanan and its surroundings now have direct flight access to Jakarta, which is expected to drive the growth of various sectors, from business to tourism.
