TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Thursday, December 24, the Bireuen District Court in Aceh Province sentenced Rahmat Juanda to death for the murder of a female student in Bireuen Regency. Rahmat did not attend the hearing in person but joined the proceedings remotely from the Bireuen Class IIB Prison.

Chief Judge Raden Eka stated that Rahmat was found guilty of premeditated murder with intent to steal the victim's belongings. He was sentenced under Articles 340 and 362 of the Penal Code. The death sentence was in line with the prosecutor's original charge, which Rahmat has appealed.

The prosecutor had previously stated that Rahmat had been convincingly proven guilty of killing and stealing from the victim, identified as SAH, a 21-year-old student at a university in Bireuen Regency.

The prosecutor said the crime took place on August 1, 2024, at the victim's house in Geudong Alue, Kota Juang district. Rahmat carried out his plan while the victim was asleep. The victim tried to resist and call for help but was unsuccessful. She was later pronounced dead based on the autopsy results from the Fauziah Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Bireuen Regency.

The prosecutor also revealed that a few days before the incident, Rahmat had approached the victim to borrow a motorcycle. After receiving an unpleasant response, Rahmat became angry and resentful.

"Based on the facts revealed during the trial, the motive for the murder was driven by the defendant's anger toward the victim," the prosecutor said.
