TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The chief executive officer of PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota, has decided to resign from his position as a top executive of the state-owned company engaged in agriculture and construction consulting.
Joao explained that his resignation was a way to uphold both his honor and the company’s reputation, following the failure to achieve prosperous farmers in Indonesia.
Joao’s decision is partly connected to the role of Indonesia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Board, known as BPI Danantara, which he believes has been unable to fulfill the tasks assigned by President Prabowo Subianto.
According to Joao, Danantara should have focused on advancing food security in collaboration with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises. However, during Joao’s six-month tenure, he observed that Danantara did not prioritize this mission.
“I am taking this step to protect my honor. I was very eager to contribute and help build farming communities while developing our agriculture. Unfortunately, we faced a lack of support from the president’s aides, who created a very complicated bureaucracy,” Joao said at his office in East Jakarta on Monday, August 11, 2025.
Joao also pointed out that the government currently controls only 10 percent of the national food sector. The remaining 90 percent is dominated by powerful businessmen and entrepreneurs, which he views as a serious threat to the country’s food sovereignty.
“A nation that cannot control critical aspects of basic needs, especially food, is in a very dangerous position,” Joao warned.
He emphasized the importance of government action to ensure food availability and maintain food security for the country’s sustainability. However, Joao noted that government intervention has been insufficient, particularly by Danantara, which manages operational and investment affairs in the state-owned company.
