ELON Musk, the world's richest person, is attempting to challenge the entrenched two-party system in the United States. He has proposed a strategy for a potential new political party, which he discussed in a series of writings on X. Musk has revealed his intention to establish a new political party, tentatively named the "America Party."
On the U.S. Independence Day, July 4, Musk posed a question to his followers: whether they desire independence from the existing two-party system, or what he referred to as a "uni-party," and whether they would support the formation of what he termed the "America Party." Accompanying this question was a poll inviting users to vote on the idea.
Why Does Musk Want to Create a Party?
Musk, who had previously provided significant financial support for President Donald Trump's reelection campaign, holds a major disappointment over Trump's tax policy through the "Big and Beautiful Bill," as reported by Axios.
Since then, Musk has become a vocal critic-especially of Trump's major legislative initiative, which Musk described as fiscally irresponsible and harmful to America's competitiveness. He has shifted his focus to disrupting the current political landscape.
The bill, signed into law on July 4 during a significant ceremony at the White House, includes very large new expenditures, particularly for Trump's expanded migrant deportation initiatives, and is estimated to add about US$3.3 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
Musk's opposition to the bill and his call for fiscal restraint triggered a strong response from Trump, who reportedly threatened to withdraw federal subsidies for Musk's companies and hinted at investigating Musk's immigration status.
The initiative to establish a new party marks a significant escalation in Musk's political involvement. He has shifted from an advisory role to a direct challenge to the existing party system. The coming months will reveal how this ambitious plan unfolds and whether it can truly change the dynamics of politics in Washington.
How Does Musk Envision His New Party?
According to People, Musk's strategy for the America Party is highly targeted and not aimed at gaining broad support. He proposes to focus efforts on winning just two or three Senate seats and eight to ten House districts where the legislative margin is very narrow.
This focused approach, he argues, would allow the new party to hold the balance of power in Congress. Thus, the party effectively becomes a decisive voice on major controversial laws and ensures that the laws reflect the true public interest.
The America Party is envisioned as a centrist alternative, aiming to represent the 80 percent of Americans who feel unrepresented by the current polarized political landscape. Musk's plan is not to nominate national candidates but to strategically influence the balance of power in Congress, thus reshaping American politics from within the legislative process.
What Are Musk's Chances of Establishing a New Party?
Musk's idea for the "America Party" is still in the exploratory stage, but he has emphasized that with targeted financial resources and election strategy, the party could have a significant influence in tightly contested elections in the coming November.
Reported by Al Jazeera, experts warn that third parties historically have struggled to compete in the U.S.'s two-party system, and they could even weaken the movements they support by draining votes from more viable candidates.
Supporters and observers have said that launching a new political party is a heavy challenge-given the established voting access of Democrats and Republicans nationally and federal contribution limits.
However, Musk's track record indicates significant disruptive potential. Despite the difficulties and challenges ahead, Musk's wealth and public profile make his effort more viable than most. As the world's richest person and the owner of companies like the car manufacturer Tesla and the rocket manufacturer SpaceX, Musk has billions of dollars at his disposal: Bloomberg's Billionaire Index estimates his net worth at US$361 billion (about Rp 5.8 quadrillion).
Musk acknowledges the possibility of his new party's low success. However, if successful, it could fundamentally reshape the political landscape.
