TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir is again discussing the planned merger of several state-owned aviation companies. He targets the study for the merger to be completed this year.
Erick discussed the plan in a meeting with a number of CEOs of state-owned aviation companies on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Some of the officials present included the CEOs of PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT Citilink Indonesia, and PT Pelita Air Service. In addition, officials from PT Angkasa Pura and PT AirNav Indonesia were also present.
Erick said the meeting discussed the merger plan of several present SOEs. When reporters asked about the possibility, he confirmed that they discussed the merger of Garuda Indonesia, Pelita Air, and Citilink.
Erick hopes that the study for the merger can be completed within half a year. "This is part of the roadmap for the next six months. Why did I gather today? It is part of the discussion," Erick said after the meeting at the BUMN Ministry Office in Central Jakarta.
In addition, Erick said that the merger, if it takes place, will only be between fellow airlines. Previously, there was a merger plan between airline PT Garuda Indonesia and PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Injourney), which manages PT Angkasa Pura.
Erick said the plan to merge the airline with the airport company was not among the discussed possibilities. "If between airports and flights remain separated, but between flights. We will talk about the synergies and restructuring," said Erick.
Plans to merge several state-owned aviation companies have emerged several years ago. In mid-2023, Garuda Indonesia's then President Director, Irfan Setiaputra, revealed that the discussion process regarding merger exploratory steps continued intensively, especially concerning the issue of a merger between Garuda Indonesia Group and Pelita Air.
"Garuda Indonesia Group will certainly support and view positively the efforts of the merger discourse, which will certainly be based on a prudent outlook business study," Irfan said as reported Antara on August 22, 2023. At the time, Irfan explained that the plan was still in its early stages, with Garuda Indonesia exploring various business synergy opportunities.
