Failure of Indonesian National Team in 2024 AFF Cup Should be a Lesson for Shin Tae-yong, PSSI Chair Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) Chair Erick Thohir said that the failure of the Indonesian national team to qualify for the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup or now called the 2024 ASEAN Cup should be a valuable lesson for coach Shin Tae-yong in handling a team that is mostly under 22 years old. The Garuda squad was eliminated after being defeated by the Philippines 0-1 in the last match of the Group B preliminary round at the Manahan Stadium, Solo, Central Java, Saturday, December 21, 2024.

In this decisive match, coach Shin Tae-yong, who is familiarly called STY, fielded his best squad. Several players who play abroad, namely Marselino Ferdinan, Rafael Struick, Pratama Arhan and Asnawi Mangkualam played as starters. Even so, the performance of the Indonesian football team was not convincing.

The game of Marselino and his colleagues only began to develop in the second half of the first half. However, when the tempo of Indonesia's attacks on the Philippine defense increased, team captain Muhammad Ferarri was given a red card for being provoked and elbowing Philippine player Amani Aguinaldo so that the referee sent him off the field in the 42nd minute. At that time, Indonesia was preparing for a corner kick.

Despite being outnumbered, the Indonesian national team tried to increase their attacks at the start of the second half. Several opportunities were created. However, the Garuda squad experienced another unfavorable situation. The referee pointed to the penalty spot after Dony Tri Pamungkas was deemed to have committed handball. The Philippines took advantage of the opportunity. Bjorn Martin Kristensen, who was the executor, did his job well so that the Philippines led 1-0 in the 63rd minute and the score remained until the end of the match.

The defeat made Indonesia finish third in Group B with four points. After starting with a 1-0 win at Myanmar's home ground, Shin Tae-yong's team was held to a 3-3 draw by Laos at home. They then lost 0-1 away against Vietnam, then were defeated by the Philippines in front of their own supporters with the same score.

"If asked, I want to win against Myanmar, win against Laos, and win against the Philippines. If there is a loss against Vietnam, it is natural for a young team," said Erick as quoted from a release distributed by the PSSI media team after the defeat against the Philippines, Saturday.

"If later we have given our best until the semifinals and then lose, that's okay. But we have fought to give our best. I have said from the beginning that in this AFF our target is to give our best," he said.

"If we talk about giving our best, with our coach and players we should be able to at least qualify for the semifinals of the AFF Cup. So here of course PSSI will conduct an evaluation," Erick added.

He added that this team is projected to appear in the 2025 SEA Games which is targeted to be able to defend the gold medal that was won previously. "Because we did not make it to the semifinals of this event which is more or less the same competition as the SEA Games later, it means that many things must be fixed immediately. There is still enough time. One more year. So improve, especially the coach must also evaluate," he said.

The Philippines became the second team to qualify for the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup from Group B, accompanying Vietnam who advanced as the group champion. They will compete with Thailand and Singapore who qualified from Group A.
