TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has posthumously promoted Private First Class (Praka) Farizal Rhomadhon, an Indonesian soldier killed while serving on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, to Corporal Second Class (Kopda) and granted him full military honors.
Farizal, a member of the 133/JS Infantry Battalion of the 25/Siwah Brigade under the Iskandar Muda Military Command, was serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) when he died in the line of duty.
“He was granted a posthumous promotion from Private First Class (Praka) to Corporal Second Class (Kopda),” Colonel Infantry Dimar Bahtera, commander of the 25/Siwah-Aceh Infantry Brigade, told reporters in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
Dimar said Farizal was also eligible for burial at Giripeni Heroes Cemetery (TMP) in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, a military burial ground reserved for those recognized for service to the nation. However, he stressed that the final decision on the burial site would be left entirely to the family.
Farizal’s parents had initially hoped to bury him at Nambangan public cemetery in Lendah, Kulon Progo, about one kilometer from the family home where mourners had gathered.
Still, military officials suggested that burial at the Heroes Cemetery would better reflect the honor accorded to the fallen soldier.
“We can only advise and recommend burial at the Heroes Cemetery for the sake of honor and as a symbol of the state,” Dimar said. “It can also serve as an example, education, and motivation for the public, as well as for his family and future generations.”
Regarding the repatriation of Farizal’s remains, Dimar said the UN had completed a military farewell ceremony in Beirut on Thursday.
His body was then scheduled to be flown from Lebanon to Turkey on Friday local time, with all administrative and repatriation arrangements being handled directly by the United Nations.
“All planning activities, both administrative and repatriation-related, are being directly managed by the UN. The current plan is for the body to depart Lebanon on Friday local time,” he said.
From Turkey, the remains of Farizal and two other fallen Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel are expected to be flown to Indonesia, where they will receive a state military honor ceremony before being handed over to their respective families.
“Based on the latest information, if the flight departs on Friday, it is estimated to arrive in Indonesia around Saturday or Sunday,” Dimar said.
Farizal’s death has drawn national attention in Indonesia, with military authorities honoring him for his service in one of the world’s longest-running UN peacekeeping operations.
