TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The repatriation process of Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon, an Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper who died during a United Nations (UN) mission in Lebanon, is ongoing amid complex procedures and a volatile security situation on the ground.
Commander of the 25th Infantry Brigade/Siwah-Aceh, Dimar Bahtera, confirmed that Farizal was killed by a mortar explosion while performing Isha prayers near a mosque close to a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) post on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
“So the incident occurred during Isha prayers, not dawn prayers as previously reported,” Dimar said while paying his respects at the funeral home in Lendah, Kulon Progo, on Tuesday, March 31.
According to him, a mortar shell landed near the mosque where Farizal and several colleagues were praying before detonating moments later, fatally wounding the soldier.
Following the incident, Farizal’s body was evacuated from the scene to a UNIFIL headquarters facility for initial funeral rites and final respects from fellow peacekeepers. The remains are scheduled to be transferred to a hospital in Beirut for a standard autopsy, expected to take place on April 1, subject to security conditions.
Dimar emphasized that the timeline for repatriation remains uncertain due to the dynamic conflict situation in Lebanon. “We cannot yet determine the exact time of arrival in Indonesia because the situation there is very dynamic,” he said.
The repatriation process is being handled entirely by the United Nations and UNIFIL, involving multiple stages of international documentation and coordination. With civil aviation routes in Lebanon currently closed, the transfer of the body is expected to be rerouted through neighboring countries such as Egypt or Jordan, in coordination with Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and defense attachés.
Upon arrival in Indonesia, Farizal’s body will first be received in Jakarta for an official military ceremony at TNI Headquarters and the Ministry of Defense. It will then be flown to Kulon Progo, where it will be handed over to the family.
Dimar stated that, in accordance with the family’s wishes, Farizal will be laid to rest at the Tambangan Lendah public cemetery with full military honors. He has been appointed to lead the funeral ceremony.
“As a form of state respect, there will be an honorary ceremony and a military funeral,” he said.
