TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rain has been falling in Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia since Monday, January 6, 2025. A number of amateur videos on social media show flash floods inundating Mecca with brown water.
Quoting Arab News, Medina and Jeddah were hit by heavy rainfall on Monday, with floods in low-lying areas. The Directorate General of Civil Defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued warnings for locals and visitors to avoid entering waterlogged areas.
Saudi Arabia's National Center for Meteorology (NCM) predicted moderate to heavy rains in several areas, such as Asir, Al-Bahah City, and Mecca, accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds.
Through its official X account, the Directorate General of Civil Defense also issued a warning to stay away from flood-risk areas when it rains. “Stay away from low-lying areas, water pools, and deep valleys,” reads the @SaudiDCD account post today, Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Based on the official website of NCM Saudi Arabia, a red or alert early warning is in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The area likely to be affected by heavy rain is Al Ahs Governorate. The wind speed there is said to be high. Visibility is also limited due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.
One of the amateur videos uploaded by the Mecca Governorate's social media account @makkahregion shows heavy rain occurring in the Kaaba area, Masjidilharam, on Tuesday afternoon, January 7. Other videos show the region swept by storms, lightning, and even tornadoes.
According to the NCM, winds over the Red Sea will blow from the northeast in the northern and central parts, and from the southeast to southwest in the south, with speeds of 20 to 50 kilometers per hour. Wave heights can reach 1.5 meters to more than two meters in calm to choppy conditions.
