TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rescue teams, along with villagers, are still searching for victims on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, after heavy rain and flash floods struck northern Pakistan. According to The Hindu, the death toll in the last five days has nearly reached 400. The monsoon rain that has been falling since last week triggered landslides, swept away villages, and left dozens of people missing.

Villages Wiped Out

According to a report by CNA, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recorded 356 deaths in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since Thursday night. Dozens of other victims were found in surrounding provinces.

The village of Dalori in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was one of the worst-affected areas. Residents and rescue teams were digging through mud and debris to search for the missing. Umar Islam, 31, a laborer whose father died last Monday, said, "Our misery is beyond explanation. In a matter of minutes, we lost everything we had. Our lives are ruined."

Another resident, Fazal Akbar, 37, described the flood as horrific. He said, "It happened so suddenly that no one even had a minute to react. Announcements were made from the mosque, and villagers rushed to begin the rescue themselves. In less than 20 minutes, our village was reduced to ruins."

Damaged Roads Hinder Evacuation

Many roads are cut off, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach affected areas and conduct assessments. Telecommunication networks are also damaged in numerous areas. In Balochistan province, local official Muhammad Younis said the rain damaged 40 to 50 homes in two districts and blocked the main highway connecting the region to Sindh.

Heavy rain also started on Tuesday in Sindh province, a previously relatively safe southern region. Local officials warned of urban flooding risks in major cities, including Karachi, due to fragile infrastructure. Motorists in Karachi were stranded in water, several areas lost electricity, and the drainage system was unable to handle the volume of rainwater.

Monsoon Rain Continues

The NDMA stated that monsoon rain is expected to continue until Saturday, August 23, with another wave at the end of this month. Since June 26, over 700 people have died and nearly 1,000 people have been injured throughout the rainy season.

Pakistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, often experiencing extreme weather. In 2022, monsoon floods submerged a third of the country and claimed about 1,700 lives.
