TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia will continue to prioritize the unity and centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN. He said the move was in line with President Prabowo Subianto's direction.
"President Prabowo has stressed that Indonesia wants to be a good neighbor. Of course, as a neighbor, this starts from the ASEAN region," Sugiono said while delivering a speech at the Foreign Minister's Annual Press Statement (PPTM) 2025, at the Foreign Ministry office in Central Jakarta on Friday, January 10, 2025.
The minister said that ASEAN member countries are the target of Prabowo's visit after being elected president. The visit even took place before Prabowo's presidential inauguration, Sugiono added. "This shows the importance of ASEAN to Indonesia."
According to Sugiono, the centrality of ASEAN is demonstrated, among other things, by countries' respect for ASEAN norms such as the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia or the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC).
"Therefore, Indonesia will continue to encourage support and respect for the TAC, which is becoming more comprehensive," he said.
Sugiono also said that Indonesia would actively seek to help resolve the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.
In addition, Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia's role in ASEAN is in line with Asta Cita (the eight missions), which also includes Indonesia's vision to further strengthen its pre-eminence and leadership at the global level.
The PPTM 2025 is the first press statement agenda for Sugiono since he was inaugurated as Foreign Minister last October. PPTM 2025 was attended by nearly 300 people, including invited media, former foreign ministers, and ambassadors of friendly countries.
