Foreign Ministry: 157 Indonesians Face Death Penalty Abroad, Most in Malaysia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Andy Rachmianto, the Director General of Protocol and Consular at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that there are currently 157 Indonesian citizens awaiting execution of the death penalty overseas.

"We currently have 157 Indonesian citizens whom we deeply regret are waiting for their turn to face the death penalty. The majority, probably 90 percent, is in Malaysia. The rest are in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In total, there are still 157 Indonesian citizens awaiting the death penalty abroad," said Rachmianto on Monday, April 21, 2025.

Despite the Indonesian government's ongoing efforts through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide legal protection and assistance to Indonesian citizens facing the threat of the death penalty, the number of new cases continues to increase each year.

"In 2023, we managed to save 19 Indonesian citizens from facing the death penalty abroad. I’m referring to the 2023 data since I haven’t yet received the report for 2024. But based on that year alone, while we succeeded in freeing 19 individuals, 25 others were newly sentenced to death. That leaves us with a shortfall of six," he said.

Rachmianto pointed out that a major contributing factor to these cases is the lack of awareness and understanding, particularly among Indonesian migrant workers, regarding local customs, laws, and regulations in the countries where they work.

"One of the main issues in most of these cases is the lack of knowledge and understanding, especially among Indonesian workers, about the conditions, customs, norms, cultures, and particularly legal regulations, both employment and immigration laws, and so on," he said.

According to Rachmianto, this situation poses a collective challenge for the government in addressing the information gap that still exists among Indonesian citizens working abroad.

"This information gap that still exists is our joint responsibility," he added.
