France: Israeli Settler Violence That Killed Palestinian Activist Is Terrorism

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - France on Tuesday, July 29, condemned the killing of a Palestinian activist in the West Bank who contributed to the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land. As reported by Al Arabiya, Paris referred to Israeli settler violence as "terrorism".

The Palestinian Authority said that Israeli settlers killed Awdah Muhammad Hathaleen, a teacher, on Monday.

"France condemns this murder with the utmost firmness as well as all deliberate acts of violence committed by extremist settlers against the Palestinian population, which are multiplying across the West Bank," said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"These acts of violence are acts of terrorism."

The spokesperson urged the Israeli authorities to "immediately sanction the perpetrators of these acts of violence, which continue with complete impunity, and protect Palestinian civilians".

The Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Education accused Israeli settlers of killing Hathaleen, 31, "in their attack on the village of Umm al-Khair" near Hebron, in the southern occupied territory.

Israeli police said they were investigating "an incident near Carmel," a settlement near Umm al-Khair, and added that an Israeli resident had been arrested for interrogation.

However, the Israeli court on the same day ordered the release of Yinon Levi, an illegal settler accused of fatally shooting Hathaleen.

Video footage shared by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem showed Yinon Levi firing shots at Hathaleen.

According to the newspaper Haaretz, as reported by Anadolu, the Magistrate's Court in Jerusalem released Levi and placed him under house arrest.

"The police attributed to him the crimes of manslaughter and shooting with a firearm," the newspaper wrote.

The European Union and the United States had previously imposed sanctions on Levi for his violence against Palestinians.

Awdah Hathaleen was a resident of Masafer Yatta, a series of hamlets in the southern hills of Hebron that Israel has declared a military zone.

Efforts by local residents to prevent Israeli forces from demolishing their homes became the subject of  the film No Other Land, which won Best Documentary at this year's Oscars.

His Israeli co-director, Yuval Abraham, uploaded a video on Instagram showing an armed man arguing with a group of people, while shouts could be heard in Hebrew and Arabic.

"An Israeli settler just shot (Awdah Hathaleen) in the lungs, a remarkable activist who helped us film No Other Land in Masafer Yatta," wrote Abraham.
