TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has selected three airlines to handle air transportation for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage: Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air Group, and Saudia Airlines.
This announcement was made by Hilman Latief, Director General of Hajj and Umrah Organizers (PHU) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, during a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) at the parliament building in Central Jakarta on Monday, January 6, 2025.
“Of the four airlines considered, two are domestic: Garuda Airlines and Lion Air Group. Saudia Airlines will serve vendors abroad. So, we have two domestic carriers and one international,” Hilman explained.
Hilman clarified that these three airlines were chosen from four that had applied or were invited by the government to participate in the hearing. Previously, on January 2, 2025, Commission VIII and the government held an RDP with the president directors of the three selected airlines, as well as Citilink.
According to him, the two selected domestic airlines met the government's established criteria. The Ministry of Religious Affairs based its selection on the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs (KMA) Number 1197 of 2024 concerning Guidelines for the Provision of Air Transportation for Regular Hajj Pilgrims in 1446 H/2025 M.
“We have a basis for our selection, including each airline's experience and their on-time performance,” Hilman stated.
Abdul Wachid, Chair of the Working Committee (Panja) for Hajj Costs of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, indicated that the government is open to other airlines besides Garuda Indonesia and Saudia Airlines serving the departure and return of 2025 Hajj pilgrims.
“For the sake of transparency, we will be more open to other airlines,” Abdul told reporters at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Regarding the selection process, Abdul explained that aircraft companies can submit a budget proposal to the government. He said that the selection of airlines will be based on the tariffs and services offered. “Automatically, the more affordable options are preferable for us.”
The member of the DPR Commission VIII added that the airlines will later engage in three to four syarikah (cooperation agreements in Islam) to foster competition and improve services.
