TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Senior Governor of Bank Indonesia, Destry Damayanti, mentioned a growing trend of Indonesian migrant workers in Japan, during a Financial Education event for Indonesian Migrant Workers at Dhanapala Building, Jakarta, on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Two sectors are highly sought after by Japanese people for Indonesian workers. Firstly, there is a high demand for caregivers, as the Japan population is dominated by the elderly.
“They say the Indonesian workers here are patient, diligent, persevering, and accustomed to looking after the elderly,” she remarked.
The Japanese industry also seeks tech-savvy youths to employ At the same time, she said, Indonesia has a demographic bonus consisting of young people, marking for an attractive opportunity for Indonesian migrant workers.
Based on data presented by Destry, the number of Indonesian workers in Japan has been growing since 2022, with 5,832; 9,673 the following year; and 12,720 in 2024.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong remains the country where most Indonesian workers are situated, with 60,065 workers in 2022, 88,167 in 2023, and 99,773 in 2024. Most workers are high school and junior high school graduates.
At the same event, the Minister of Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection, Abdul Kadir Karding, stated that Indonesian migrant workers contributed remittances amounting to Rp253.3 trillion in 2024. Meanwhile, the number of workers placed abroad in 2024 was 297,000 workers.
“If we can place 425,000 Indonesian migrant workers (in 2025), then, God willing, the (remittence) will be around Rp433.6 trillion,” said Abdul.
