TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Vatican will announce a nine-day mourning period following the passing of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21, 2025. The Pontiff, a man born Jose Mario Bergoglio, will be laid to rest after the mourning period.
This information was conveyed by Jakarta's Archbishop, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo. "The Vatican’s mourning period is nine days, thus the funeral will be held nine days from today," he said a few hours after the pope died.
Suharyo obtained information about the mourning period and the funeral of Pope Francis after communicating with the Vatican Embassy in Indonesia. Besides the funeral arrangements for Pope Francis, Suharyo was also informed that the selection of the pope’s successor will take place 15 days after his passing.
Suharyo also said the Apostolic Nunciature, or the Vatican Embassy, will open its offices for the mourning masses in Jakarta starting tomorrow morning, Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The embassy is located at Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur No. 18, Central Jakarta.
"Tomorrow morning, the Vatican Embassy will start opening its doors for our brothers and sisters who wish to convey their condolences for the passing of the Pope," stated Suharyo.
The Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, announced the passing of 88-year-old Pope Francis from Casa Santa Marta.
"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church," said Cardinal Farrell, as quoted from the Vatican's website on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Along with the statement, Cardinal Kevin also conveyed the Vatican's gratitude for Pope Francis. "With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."
Pope Francis passed away one day after Easter Sunday. The Pope conveyed several messages through an aide, while the Argentinian man briefly appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
Prior to his passing, doctors advised Pope Francis to limit his activities; thus, he did not lead the Easter Mass in the Vatican. However, he still attended the end of the event to give the Urbi et Orbi blessing to the city and the world and convey a message of peace.
